LAKE STATION, Ind. (AP) — Police are searching for a driver who fled on foot after his speeding car struck and killed a construction worker on a northwestern Indiana highway.
State police say a crew was patching potholes in a construction zone on westbound Interstate 80-94 in Lake Station when 45-year-old Christopher Jenkins was hit about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and thrown through the car's windshield.
Another worker stood in front of the car to prevent the driver from fleeing, but he got out of the car and ran away. State troopers and Lake Station officers hadn't located the man but found items possibly identifying him inside the car.
Jenkins, of Valparaiso, died at the scene. He was an employee of Walsh Construction of Gary.
