Ex-Boone sheriff retiring after grand jury action

LEBANON, Ind. (AP) — Former Boone County Sheriff Dennis Brannon is retiring from the department one month after a grand jury decided not to recommend charges against him.

Brannon, who was sheriff from 1999 to 2006, was investigated after a state audit uncovered questions about the use of county-issued credit cards. A grand jury convened in February decided there wasn't enough evidence to charge Brannon.

Brannon, who's currently a captain in the department's civil division, informed Sheriff Ken Campbell last week of his decision to retire. He will take six weeks of accrued vacation before his retirement becomes official.

Campbell said Brannon's decision was based on maximizing his pension and had nothing to do with the investigation.
