Couple found dead after fire in motel room

WARREN, Ind. (AP) — A couple was found dead Wednesday after a fire in a motel room where they had been staying since a fire at their home, authorities said.

Autopsies were being conducted to confirm the cause of death for Glen Holcombe, 72, and Carolyn Holcombe, 64, said Leon Hurlburt, the Huntington County coroner.

The couple had been staying at the Huggy Bear Motel near Interstate 69 and Indiana 5 after a recent fire at their home in Warren, about 30 miles southwest of Fort Wayne.

A person at the nursing home where Carolyn Holcombe worked called the motel to check on her when she didn’t show up for work Wednesday morning, police said. The motel’s desk clerk went to the room and then called police.

The coroner confirmed the deaths about 9:40 a.m.

A cause of the fire was not immediately known, and investigators from the state fire marshal’s office were at the scene.
