MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — New federal rules requiring that toys be tested for lead paint could put the Grinch into efforts to help needy children during the holidays.
The Northwest Indiana Woodworkers Association has spent nearly two decades crafting toys to give away at Christmas but says it expects to discontinue its work because of the rules that take effect in February.
Toys for Kids committee chairman Bob Roach says the group supports efforts to protect children from potentially dangerous toys. He says none of the paint the group uses contains lead but that testing to prove that is too expensive.
Members created nearly 1,000 cradles, cars, trucks, banks, whistles and other toys this year that will be distributed through 21 churches and other groups.
