INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana State Police say a 14-year-old who was shot at by a trooper did not have a real gun as initially was believed.
The trooper pulled over the boy for speeding on Saturday on Indianapolis' west side. Police say the boy was acting nervous, reaching under his seat and struggling with the trooper outside the car before getting back in and taking off.
The trooper says he saw what he thought was a gun under the driver's seat and opened fire, blowing out two of the vehicle's tires.
Police say the replica was realistic-looking.
1st Sgt. Dave Bursten says "if somebody pointed a handgun like what I saw on the floorboard of that car at me, if they pointed it at me, I would shoot them."
The boy is charged with battery of a police officer and disorderly conduct.
